RHS Chelsea Flower Show
RSPCA Garden 2023
The RSPCA Garden designed by Martyn Wilson Sanctuary Garden | Award: Silver-Gilt
Absolute Architecture were delighted to be asked by garden designer Martyn Wilson (https://wilsongardendesign.co.uk/) to build a hide in the RSPCA wildlife garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023, which marks the start of their 200th anniversary celebrations in 2024. Created by award-winning designer Martyn Wilson and funded by Project Giving Back, it's a stylish, modern interpretation of a wildlife sanctuary. As well as looking beautiful, it's full of ideas you can easily recreate at home, whatever space you have.
A stylish, modern interpretation of a wildlife sanctuary, this garden offers plenty of take-home ideas to apply to your own outdoor space. A canopy of native trees and shrubs provide shade and shelter for birds, insects and mammals, as well as layers of plants and flowers to attract pollinating insects. Hidden hedgehog boxes is nestled within 'dead hedges', a natural stone wall is hung with contemporary nesting boxes, meanwhile, a green roof and wall-mounted bee hotels provide extra habitats.
Our role in the project
In the corner of the garden sits a contemporary structure akin to a wildlife observation hide, enabling views out into the space. A natural stone feature wall, with contemporary bird nesting boxes forms the rear. Laser-cut Corten steel contains a modern interpretation of a ‘dead hedge’ made from recycled garden waste which serves as a habitat for birds, mammals and insects.
The garden is destined to find a home at the RSPCA’s Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre and education hub in Cheshire after the show, where it will continue to offer sanctuary for wildlife, as well as providing staff, volunteers and visitors with a place to rest.
